Frauscher Thermal Motors opened a technical centre in April 2018. Since 2001, Frauscher has been conducting research on all types of Stirling engines. The Stirling technology makes it possible to use sewage gas, landfill gas as well as wood and biogas for electricity generation. The new technical centre offers almost 2,000 m² for the production and testing of engines with external combustion, in a focus on reducing the waste of resources.

In the context of a public-funded research project, Frauscher Thermal Motors is testing the Stirling engine A600 (5 kW_el) in combination with a biomass furnace. An additional prototype is currently being made and will soon be ready for testing. The production for an 11 kW_el Stirling module will also begin before the end of the year. A high performance burner will be developed for natural gas and then gradually adapted to lean gases.

Research & development for CHP solutions with solid biomass, lean and hazardous gases, thermodynamic calculation methods and the manufacturing of high-temperature heat-exchangers (up to 900 °C).
